LMT Posted September 9 · Member Posted September 9 Hello I just got this coin (new to all all this), its weighs 1.77 grams. Its meant to be a silver hemidrachm, but I have no idea if that's correct. Any advice on what it is and if its legit would be great. Cheers. (Sorry the images are not great my camera is not the best.) Quote
Phil Anthos Posted September 9 · Member Posted September 9 From Cherronesus in Thrace. The weight is about right for a hdmidrachm but there's no way to positively confirm authenticity from a picture, especially these pictures. ~ Peter 1 1 Quote
-monolith- Posted September 9 · Member Posted September 9 (edited) It's a Thrace, Cherronesos, here is the one from my collection. Unfortunately Cherronesos coins are one of the most counterfeited coins on the market and the fakes are so good they have fooled even the most experienced ancient numismatist. Province, City: Thrace, Cherronesos Denomination: AR Hemidrachm Mint: Cardia (480 - 350 BC) Obverse: Forepart of lion right, head left Reverse: Quadripartite incuse square with alternating raised and sunken quarters; Pellets in one sunken quarter and bunch of grapes in other References: BMCG 3. 183. 11; McClean II 127. 4079; Weber 2419; HGC 3.2 1437 Edited September 11 by -monolith- 3 Quote
LMT Posted September 10 · Member Author Posted September 10 Thank you for the reference images mate. Yeah the one I have I cant tell if its has heavy patina but something just seems off, I don't know if its worth trying to clean it or not. I got it dirt cheap so even if it is fake, at least it means I now have a reference to help ID fakes in the future to help avoid them. Quote
