GERMANICVS Posted September 4 · Member Share Posted September 4 This is probably the scarcest coin in my collection - A sestertius of Vitellius with reverse Concordia. I picked up this coin many years ago at an antique market. As you can appreciate, it is very worn. However, it is as it seems a very scarce type. There are a handful of reverse types for Sestertii of Vitellius, the most common of which are the Mars and Pax Augusti types. There are also a couple of scarce types, for example, Honos et Virtus, Victoria inscribing on shield, and specially, reverses portraying L. Vitellius (Vitellius" father) seated on platform addressing 3 citizens, and a seemingly extremely rare type with SPQR OB CIV SER on wreath. The type I am posting shows Concordia seated r, and corresponds to R.I.C 133: Vitellius. AD 69. Æ Sestertius. Rome mint. Laureate and draped bust right / Concordia seated left, holding branch and scepter. RIC I 133. The CONCORDIA AUG. reverse also appears to be a very scarce. I have located pictures of only 3 (maybe 4) other examples in the web: These are from the BMC and ANS collections respectively, and one example sold at a CNG auction in 2007. All of these, including my example appear to be all from the same die pair. As I mentioned, the example I am posting is extensively worn, but it seems to be a very scarce type, of a scarce denomination of a relatively scarce emperor. What else can a collector ask for ?🙂 If anybody is aware of any other specimens of the type, I would really appreciate seeing them🙂 . Please post your own examples of Vitellius" coinage. I know there is (at least) one other thread on the general topic of Vitellius, but if you wish, please post your coins. I am sure we all would like to see them. Thanks! 8
