MrZun Posted September 1, 2024 · Member Posted September 1, 2024 (edited) Here is an interesting Coin, a sestertius from the republic, back when It was a tiny silver Coin. What i Wonder is If It is Authentic, since i don't have much information about this kind of coins. It has an Weight of 1,02 g and is 13mm of diameter VID-20240901-WA0002.mp4 VID-20240901-WA0003.mp4 Edited September 1, 2024 by MrZun 6 1 Quote
akeady Posted September 1, 2024 · Supporter Posted September 1, 2024 Yes - the sestertius was originally a silver coin and first minted at the same time as the denarius and quinarius (around 211 BC). It wasn't minted for long, only returning in the late Republic - these later issues are mostly rare or very rare. That one looks OK to me - the weight and diameter are fine too. I have a couple of these (Cr. 44/7): And a later one (Cr. 464/8a): ATB, Aidan. 6 1 Quote
Ryro Posted September 1, 2024 · Supporter Posted September 1, 2024 @MrZun you seem to have good taste in coins, but are unsure about every coin. All of your posts are asking others for authentication help... and there's been a lot. Have you thought about reading up on fake coins at Forum? Check out the first thread "ancient coin authentication 101". But you'll also be able to look up your coin and see if there are known fakes of the type and even a list of known fake sellers, and so much more. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?board=9.0&srsltid=AfmBOopFLHD4gon_M7PRXYCNDtkzd3W20Pk5efQ8KIpBdVbhOppgzyhp You can also check on ac search to see if your coin is the correct style and correct approximate weight by comparing it to others that have sold at major auction: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?term=Roman+republic+sestertius+Roma+Dioscuri+&category=1-2&lot=&date_from=&date_to=&thesaurus=1&images=1&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1¤cy=usd&order=0 I hope you'll use these tools and find solace in doing the work yourself. I can't say it enough, you'll never be able to authenticate a coin by pictures, nor will anyone on this site. But by working on your own skills and researching you'll get the hang of things. I'm hoping to see more threads of yours showing off your great new finds and less of the tedious, "is this authentic?" Threads. 1 2 4 Quote
