Sulla80 Posted August 30, 2024 · Supporter Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) They all look reasonable to me - but it can be challenging to recognize fake or genuine from photos alone. Here's a challenge gallery : which of these coins is a modern fake? (Note: there could be more than one) Edited August 30, 2024 by Sulla80 4 Quote

My first look through had A, C and E as probably fake and G through J as “would want to see in hand” but wouldn’t buy if it were me. I actually thought B looked pretty good so that was a surprise to me that Nemo was able to find a cast twin. Scary! Quote
Sulla80 Posted August 30, 2024 · Supporter Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) I agree - great work @Nemo! Sadly @Curtisimo's caution is prudent and @Ryro called it - there are no genuine coins in that set - caveat emptor...a few have elegant collector tags (provenance?) to go with them: "It is absolutely impossible to give strict rules by which to recognise forged or falsified coins. Nothing but the experience of long practice confirmed by some mistakes, paid for in good money, can enable one to attain by degrees the eye of an expert, which without much reasoning recognises by intuition the authenticity or falseness of a coin." -Roman Coins, Elementary Manual by Francesco Gnecchi, translated by Alfred Watson Hands, published in 1903. Nemo Posted August 30, 2024 · Member Posted August 30, 2024 May I ask what is wrong with I and J? Is it possible to get edge pictures of both? Based on pictures these 2 would fool me and I would be so very happy to be certain, that they are actually fake. H looked like a Fourrée. Quote

You can see the Solar Yllach being mentioned in the provenance. My Coin travelled from spain, Usa and is now here in Brazil. Edited August 30, 2024 by MrZun 1 Quote
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted September 3, 2024 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted September 3, 2024 Just goes to show how hard it can be sometimes to recognize fakes. The only ones that really stuck out to me are a couple of the Augustus examples. 1 Quote
