Operator1997 Posted August 28, 2024 · Member Posted August 28, 2024 This is my first post in this community, so hello! I am a long time lurker, but normally I am active in the subreddit r/ancientcoins (I recognize some members here and there so hi). Recently, my latest purchase is a Roman Republic L. Rutilius Flaccus denarius (RRC 387/1), RCV 318, 77 BC, from Incitatus, accompanied by an old envelope, 19th century, which according to the listing, presumably a French or British collection (most likely British). The most interesting thing was upon sharing it, another member of the subreddit shared me his piece, an Aurelian Tetradrachm from Alexandria (https://imgur.com/a/wbkEoPE), owned by the same individual, down to the formatting and penmanship. Even if this guy's name may be lost to time, I was hoping to reach out here to see if anybody recognizes or has a similar old coin label of this kind? Many thanks! 10 1 Quote
CPK Posted August 28, 2024 · Supporter Posted August 28, 2024 Interesting! Did you ask Steve from Incitatus if he might have any information? Welcome to the Forum, by the way. 🙂 1 Quote

Certainly piqued my curiosity. 2 Quote
Benefactor DonnaML Posted August 28, 2024 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted August 28, 2024 (edited) Certainly not French, or the collector wouldn't have written AD and BC for the dates. Or "Alexandria, Egypt" for the Aurelian. So presumably British or American. Too bad there's no reference to a particular catalog, by which one could determine a terminus post quem. Curtisimo Posted August 28, 2024 · Supporter Posted August 28, 2024 This is always a good resource to start with for British collectors. https://www.britnumsoc.org/images/BIOGRAPHIES/6_Coin_Tikts/Coin-Tickets-Main-List-008.pdf I looked and didn’t see anything that jumped out at me as similar but perhaps a closer look might turn up a handwriting match. 4 2 Quote
O-Towner Posted September 1, 2024 · Member Posted September 1, 2024 Just was going through a batch of coins I purchased and put away last year and this was in it. Looks very similar to yours but no idea who it's from. BTW, this one's only around 3" across. 3 1 1 Quote

Matches up with the Aurelian Tet one of the Redditors has shown me. The AR monogram, the lines and the way the "A" is written. That confirms three coins from the collection that I have seen by far. 3 Quote
