MrZun Posted August 12 · Member Posted August 12 I Just learned that Denarius, even tought It is rare, it can have smoothing. I was wondering if this one has It or any other thing to be worried before buying. It has that blue toning around the portrait, is that normal? interestingly, the Surface of the toning is rougher than the rest of the coin. 3 Quote
Curtisimo Posted August 12 · Supporter Posted August 12 I don’t see anything concerning. It looks like a very nice coin. 3 1 Quote
Romismatist Posted August 12 · Member Posted August 12 Nice toning! I will echo everyone else in saying that I don't see anything wrong with this coin. Honestly, I haven't seen a tooled denarius yet... normally tooling is reserved for bronze coins, in particular sestertii or rarer Imperial bronzes where tooling may improve the price if the perpetrator is fortunate enough to snag an unsuspecting buyer. Aureii are also sometimes altered to fill in holes etc. I'm curious, as anyone ever come across a tooled denarius? 1 1 Quote
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted August 12 · Benefactor Benefactor Posted August 12 I have not come across a tooled denarius. Once in a while I have seen a harshly cleaned piece. Toning is a nice feature actually. Nothing about your coin suggests anything other than the fact that it is genuine and not tooled. 1 1 1 Quote
Octavius Posted August 13 · Supporter Posted August 13 Looks like a very beautiful coin. Nice , even natural wear. never had a problem with a tooled denarius. Grab it, before it gets sold! 1 1 Quote
