I recently returned from a week's holiday in Italy, staying first in Ercolano for a few days (first known as Resina, then renamed after the re-discovery of Herculaneum) and then going to Rome. This was the morning view from our balcony at the place we were staying. Breakfast freshly made by the owner's grandmother and delivered to our door each morning; stuffed croissants and other pastries, yoghurt, fruit, Italian coffee, fruit juice and lashings of nutella. View straight up Vesuvius, though we did not go up to the top.

^ I’m jealous of y’all who can visit these European locations.  I’ve never been to mainland Europe.

The dogs were going bonkers barking, a few minutes ago.

Turns out there was a young lady stopped across the road to photograph and pick the yellow wildflowers there.

She was, I daresay, rather easy on the eyesight.

IMG_9510.jpeg.6980c9b75411900e17c1f8d4f7123a20.jpeg

She spoke, but I couldn’t hear her from that distance. I think she was apologizing for causing the minor disturbance. Or for picking the flowers, maybe.

No problem. Not my flowers, and the dogs will bark at any or no provocation, be it so much as a falling leaf, or a Bigfoot in the woods.

I waved.

2 nights ago at a classic Austin, Texas honky tonk - Donn’s Depot. The group is “Grouchy Like Riley”. They’re outstanding and had just returned from some gigs in Scotland.

Ladymarcovan took some pics of the aurora borealis again tonight.

Sure, they’re not as dramatic as some pics you’ll see from elsewhere, but remember, we’re in southeast Georgia, not that far from the Florida line. It’s freaky to see the “Northern Lights” this far south!

It’s been an interesting year.

I drove up to visit my wife yesterday. It's a nearly 3 hour drive, but the last half along the MacKenzie River and then up into the mountains is quite beautiful.

IMG_20241012_1430172.jpg.b5b17abfa8309bc7e693d66836f8265f.jpg

We tried to get up there for my birthday last month but got turned back about 10 miles short due to fire activity.  🙁 However that road block had been pushed back about 15 miles so we were able to get in, and since the snows are coming this was my last chance to get there before the road is closed for the winter. But it was in the 60s and gorgeous yesterday, and Repo had fun. 🙂

Since this is only about 2 miles from the summit the water here is very clean. In fact the Upper MacKenzie is considered one of the 10 purest rivers in the US. Ironically it eventually flows into the Willamette, which is, well, not.

@Phil Anthos - what a beautiful spot!  I would be happy knowing that my final resting place would be in such a place of serene natural beauty.  (It won’t be- I’ve already purchased my cemetery plot, so I’ve got some idea of where I’ll be spending eternity.)

Here’s what a $32 surf & turf looks like from Marshside Grill in Brunswick, GA.

- 10-ounce Ribeye. I ordered it Medium. It came out more like Medium Rare, but that’s OK. It was tender and juicy. They did get a little heavy-handed with the salt.

- Local Wild Georgia Shrimp, fried. Excellent.

- Spuds. These are battered potato slices. Not exactly health food, but good.

- For my second side I got a loaded baked potato to take home for a midnight snack later, so that’s kinda like getting a second meal for the money.

It was an absolutely perfect autumn evening in the Golden Isles, with the temperature around 70°F. We wanted to eat outside on the deck, but there weren’t any tables free out there. I still went out there to take these pics of the oyster beds, marsh, and Lady Jane shrimp boat.

Just finished upgrading my leopard gecko to a taller enclosure.

Shout out to @LONGINUS for the poster and the Judaean coins he gave me a few years ago.  I need a better way of displaying them.

This is where all of my money goes these days.  Lol

One more upgrade for my crested gecko (on the left) in the spring. 🦎🦎🦎🥳

I had a gecko encounter in the vestibule of the hotel where I work the other night.  But not like that- this was a tiny little guy.

(He tried to sell me car insurance.  LOL.  Guess that joke might not work outside of the US.)

We seem to have a lot of them out in front of the hotel.  The lanterns by the door draw lots of bugs, which in turn draws lots of geckos and green anole lizards in for a midnight snack.

Local Georgia wild-caught shrimp.

Pricey, but worthwhile.  The mashed potatoes were instant, watery, and not very good.  But the shrimp was great.  And you don't go to a joint called "JB's Shrimp Shack" for the mashed potatoes.

(The baked potato I ordered to take home for later.  Midnight snack.)

Everybody can rest assured.

The Squirrel Patrol is on duty.

We’re protected!

(PS- it was on the other side of the tree, momentarily tricking the Patrol. You’ve gotta watch out for those squirrels. Sneaky. Beware their plan for world domination.)

Those pesky geikos and their car insurance. 🙄

I don’t drive, so, my geckos know not to pull any of that with me.

I would love to go to a place to see reptiles in their natural habitats.  But, I’m too terrified of traveling.  Lol.  So, pics and videos are good enough for me. 👍

Pic I took at Lake Tahoe while I was there for a wedding.  Also my amateur attempt with my phone and the comet.

Wow.  Great Lake pic, but what’s the electric green all about?

PS- I’m glad that’s a comet pic and not a missile pic.  It looks unsettlingly like some of the recent pics out of Israel!

My somewhat older phone doesn’t do night sky shots.  No way I’d have captured that.

There was a green light on a dock about a mile away. Odd that the light travelled all that way but it did.  Below is a slight angle difference showing it all gone (the pic was handheld, so it didnt come out).

And I've seen missile tests before (the ones that explode).  They are really quite dramatic, and if you didnt know what they are it can be just a tad scary!

One of the harbingers of the changing season here in Oregon is the arrival of the Dusky and Canada geese from there summer homes in northern Canada. They come in their masses and always remind me of the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz.

Caution; keep your hat on!
