Benefactor kirispupis Posted January 23 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted January 23 Ok, I can't resist the temptation any longer! The last Savoca Blue auction was probably the most interesting I've ever taken part in. There were some amazing coins and I suspect a couple may end up in a Triton auction sometime in the future. I'm not ready to disclose my major target yet, other than I won it and the coin is a groundbreaking piece for me. I will write about it in more detail, but this single coin has changed me as a collector. The only hint I'll give for now is there were at least three coins in the Greek section that were mislabeled. There were probably more, but I noticed three. I bid on all three, but for the first two I had to hold back because I knew the third could be among the most expensive I'd ever vied for. Luckily, the one person who noticed that third coin ran out of budget quickly. 🙂 After winning what will be one of the jewels in my collection, I must admit I was a bit stupefied and went a bit crazy. Despite the other bidder, I estimated I paid 5-10% of the true value of my target coin, which was probably the best one at the entire auction, so I proceeded to overpay on a bunch of others. The following is some of what I grabbed. A nice example of Gaius Pubilius when Macedon was under Roman rule A rare bronze from Abdera from a magistrate I haven't found a record of A rare Sestos bronze with Hermes A coin from Adaios (on my Thrace checklist) A cheap coin that's tentatively assigned to Zakynthos. There's some discussion that it's really from Asia Minor, but the attribution remains uncertain. A nice coin from Herod the Great with his inscription. That's where I went a bit overboard. A very nice example from Berenike II for my Lagid collection My first Roman Republican coin. I bought it for the reverse, though I'm a bit worried now about its low weight. I probably shouldn't have bought it, but it is very cool. A coin from Livia, which I wanted since reading I, Claudius A nice Denarius from Caracalla. When I bought my current one I didn't know anything and accidentally bought a fouree. I'd been wanting an official example for some time. Most of these will warrant posts of their own. I can't wait to receive them (shipping notification went out this morning) and show off my monumental addition, which I didn't include above. 🙂 There were a number of other extremely nice coins that others nabbed: A Mark Antony + Kleopatra, Obodas III, two extremely nice Bar Kochbas, etc. Did anyone else here participate? 11
ela126 Posted January 23 · Member Share Posted January 23 i have noticed that even though the Blue auctions are supposed to be discount coins, sometimes extremely nice ones work their way in. I'm excited for you to share the great win! I did not participate, instead i overspent my budget today at CGB.fr but got 2 awesome pieces
panzerman Posted January 23 · Member Share Posted January 23 Not me/ I am broke! However I have gotten some really nice coins from them in past. Their grading is along lines of CNG/ Kunker😉 John
Ryro Posted January 23 · Supporter Share Posted January 23 There were a few that I bid on and got smoked. I have been saving my budget for a major RR acquisition that I won at today's cbg.fr!... now I'm eager to see what your main target was to see if it was one of the coins I was under bidder on☺️

I bid what I felt the Ophellas should go for, but I do already have an Ophellas example of another type. A coin labeled as 'unknown' that I strongly believe is an unpublished type of Priene. The coin was very rough and I have an example from Priene.

The Priene with the legend around the amphora was also in my watchlist but I was after something else.

Factor Posted January 26 · Member Share Posted January 26 I won two provincials, one Hadrian of Ascalon (scarcer 225 date) and another is Neapolis under Philip I, this one rough but quite rare type with 3 out of 5 know specimens in museum collections.
Tetradogma Posted January 31 · Member Share Posted January 31 (edited) My one win, tempted to try and (delicately) remove those deposits. Some nice detail on this example, these tend to be very worn, but then again they are almost 2 and a half thousand years old! Persia. Achaemenid Empire. Sardeis. Time of Darios II to Artaxerxes II 420-375 BC. Siglos AR, 16 mm, 5,55 g Persian king or hero, wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance to right, holding dagger and strung bow / Incuse punch. Carradice Type IVA; BMC Arabia 175-177; Klein 763; SNG Kayhan 1031. Edited January 31 by Tetradogma
