Topcat7 Posted November 16, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 16, 2023 (edited) Using @catadc 's guidance I believe this to be John III, S. 2096 var., but I am seeking confirmation of this so if anyone can help, I would appreciate that. Benefactor Simon Posted November 16, 2023 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted November 16, 2023 I just checked Labarum , i am traveling so that is all i have access to, this coin does not match SBCV-2096 assuming the one example in Labarum is correct. @catadc has a great eye for detail, so perhaps Labrum is incorrect or he is seeing something I am missing.
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted November 16, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 16, 2023 I'm not an expert on post-1204 stuff, and I'm a little rusty on base trachea. However, size and more importantly, weight would probably help. I have the pdf version of Sear Byzantine so I can look more easily.
Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted November 16, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 16, 2023 What about Sear 2031 or 32? Sadly, there's no picture. The plate coin a couple numbers down has more of the 'fat face' Christ, kind of like this one.
catadc Posted November 16, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 16, 2023 Unfortunately, my "eye for detail" is totally blind when talking trachea; these are totally out of my interest zone. If tagging people, maybe @TheTrachyEnjoyer could help? 4
Zimm Posted November 16, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 16, 2023 I believe the coin is likely an imitation of Sear 2003, Isaac II (or an official issue in very poor style). If you look closely, you can make out the Virgin seated on a throne on the obverse, and the emperor holding an akakia and a cruciform sceptre on the reverse. 5 1
TheTrachyEnjoyer Posted November 16, 2023 · Member Share Posted November 16, 2023 I agree with Zimm. The imperial regalia seems much too crude to be official. That in combination with obverse would lend this towards being one of the (many) contemporary issac II copies
theotokevoithi Posted December 5, 2023 · Member Share Posted December 5, 2023 If it has a fleur-de-lys in the upper left ? Trachy after 1204, maybe much later. In these times if it is an imitation / official or not, depends on the recognition of a specific state authority.
Glebe Posted December 5, 2023 · Member Share Posted December 5, 2023 The top two coins below are examples of S.2096. The bottom coin is a similar variant - it is not in Sear but is listed as Uncertain Type Z in DOC IV. Ross G. Ross G. 7
panzerman Posted December 6, 2023 · Member Share Posted December 6, 2023 I only have the AV Hyperpyron from Magnesia Mint/ and now a Crusader State/ Constantinople imitation under Baldwin II Latin King in Constantinople. Baldwin type coin

I doubt it - on the coin in question Christ seems to be enthroned. I wasn't proposing S.2096, just showing some examples for comparison. theotokevoithi Posted December 7, 2023 · Member Share Posted December 7, 2023 It is the effort. We are trying to avoid latin rulers, magnates of thrace and homemade speciments during the turkish invasion of asia minor. It is byzantine coin !!!
