Hi all. Evan Saltis here (@EBS_Numis)

Some of you know me for sure from another site, but I haven't been here before. However, I know there are some intelligent and experienced collectors in this realm who could possibly help me here. All I ask is confirmation that my attributions are correct, as I don't know greek and my knowledge of Cyrillic only can help me so much.

I bought a lot of 5 Roman provincial bronzes today - $110 for the lot. They were unattributed and I thought they might be cool additions to my collection for the price. I am hoping to keep most, but maybe sell a couple of them to put into more inventory for my vest-pocket dealing.

I took some time to try and identify them, and I have come up with the following.

Coin #1 - Caracalla? 5.89g, Æ23, https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces299774.html - I am spot on here, I know, but mine doesn't have the same reverse inscription as the example coin. Mine reads 'ANTIOCH GEN CL CA' while the example in the link above reads 'ANTIOCH GEN COL CA' -  my question is whether this is something I am overthinking, or if this is something important I am missing.

Thank you in advance, and I hope I can get confirmation! It will help my confidence a lot.

Thanks,

Those coins are very nice provincials, especially from a group lot find. Welcome to NVMIS FORVMS, @EBS_Numis. One of the best resources for coins of the Balkans is Die antiken Münzen Nord-Griechenlands (AMNG), which is in several volumes. Volume Ia and Ib (Pick) are in the public domain and online here.

For example, your second coin, the Severus Alexander/Homonoia (Concordia) from Marcianopolis is #1033. Under the main listing are citations from museum collections and die variations.

You will see your reverse die listed underneath (with the T in the left field and the tied omega-nu in the right) as being the die used to strike specimens 5, 7, and 9. Looking below that, you'll see that specimen 5 is Hunter (Glasgow), 7 is Munich (Staatliches Münzkabinett), and 9 is Paris (BnF).

Hello again all.

Thank you for your messages and help. I did great - only one error and it was the coin of Caracalla from Antioch, which had a different obverse inscription as the one I thought it matched.

I have a few more questions, mostly regarding previous sales of these issues. Firstly, I want to know about the nicest coin of the lot, the Elagabalus coin of Marcianopolis with the Sarapis reverse. I think I found a die match! It sold in 2015, and the auction information is below.

Numismatik Naumann 36, 4 Oct. 2015, lot 287

I looked in Acsearch.info but I don't have enough to pay for the subscription. Could someone check the hammer price for me?

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?term=&company=45&auction=2576

I don't have time now, but I hope to get auction prices for all of these to base my final sales price off of.

Any help for the other types is appreciated, as well. I'm a busy man lately.

Thanks,

Evan
