That is a real 1966 US quarter, looks like die deteration and struck though grease.and correct struck at Philadelphia Pa. Mintage 821,101,000 its also a doubled die DDO 002 as the spread on IGWT as well die markers  the primary is a Dot on the L in Liberty at the foot of the L. Some spread can be seen also.

The coin that was used for the die is real, but this is not even cupro-nickel but some softer "white metal" - unfortunately I don't own a metals tester to determine the exact elements.

It looks like the die markers are correct...it is possible that it was another medal or platchet...From your image this is what I am seeing...in hand it may look different.

Now if its not on CN and sandwiched it lessens the chance..however the US mint strikes for other countries...that said it could be a blank from another country as its happen before...now weight the coin and give me a weight.

That way it may be traceable. ...now I agree at first I believed it to be a grease strike through...or die deteration. But looking at the link I gave you its very possible that it may have been a ddo.

I'm probably way off the mark, but if the spirit of this thread is about where we've been in the world then I'll give it a shot. I don't own any of these coins or even know anything about them...I just grabbed the images to illustrate my post.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

My first 19 years were in Duluth, Minnesota, until I joined the military after I spent a year in college for some unknown reason...

PIQ-2005S-MNe.jpg.bc18dcf916b6a5e81650b459a36f03e9.jpg

I spent the next three years stationed in California...

Then a year stationed in Japan (the island of Okinawa, specifically)...

Then I spent the next 4-1/2 years stationed in Texas...

Then the Army sent me to Germany for 2-1/2 years, outside a tiny town named Goeppingen, about 40 minutes east of Stuttgart...I loved every minute of it! I was there when the Berlin Wall came down and flooded the autobahn with those tiny (and slow) Trabants.

While in Germany, we got sent to Saudi Arabia for the first Gulf War...didn't love every minute of it...

Then it was off to Louisiana for the final year of my military time...

And, finally, I ended up in Pennsylvania for the last 30 years...

(While in the military I also spent time in Korea, the Philippines, and a very short stop in Hong Kong. I've also been to Canada and Mexico, and a lot of U.S. states for visits)

I took this picture in Cape Hatteras last week at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.  It is a collection found by beachcombers and includes a Ptolemy IV AE39 coin.

What is, in fact, the most accepted theory on how ancient coins got to the Outer Banks? Shipwrecks? Ship's ballast? Colonial collectors of ancient coins?

I would surmise that shipwrecks would be the main reason. A friend of mine suggested they could be a lost lucky pocket piece of more recent times.

There were a lot of European's coming to the new world. That said one needs to remember that at that time peroid there wasn't a mint in the new world. So it was very common to use other countries coins as a bartering system.  As was cutting cobs was how most paidva bill. B6 weight of silver or gold. As again cobs 27/28 g. Could be easy cut and weighted to pay for something.

And again money was money no matter whom minted it....  but those coins in question on the Outer banks were most probably from the Lost of the first settlers on the island...as the entire settlement residents were missing and no trace of any bodies ever found. Other than their settlement.

There was a simular site found in Southern Maryland within the last year or so.
