Septimius Severus - COS II - Mix and Match reverses!?!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

As many will be aware I specialise in the Eastern denarii of Septimius Severus. I tend to only add rarer types and oddities nowadays rather than just more common examples. I spotted this one and even though I had other examples already I thought it still worth adding.

Septimius Severus denarius

Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right
Rev:– BONI EVENTVS, Spes standing holding flower and lifting skirt
Minted in Emesa, A.D. 194 - 195
References:– BMCRE -, RIC -, RSC -
Die axis 0 degrees. Weight 2.58g

A mix up with the reverse legend and reverse type. The reverse legend should match with the Fides type instead of Spes.

Harshly cleaned.

Here are my existing examples, which show that the error wasn't limited to a sngle die:-

It is worth noting that the opposite error also occurs:-

Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right
Rev:– BONA SPES, Fides standing right holding basket of fruit and corn ears
Minted in Emesa, A.D. 194 - 195
References:– BMCRE -, RIC -, RSC -

A mix up with the reverse legend and reverse type. The reverse legend should match with the Spes type instead of Fides.

Does anyone have any other examples of types and legends being mixed up.

Interesting! This sort of "wrong legend for the goddess" error happened occasionally at the Rome mint, too. Here's a rather well-known case where Concordia is depicted holding up the hem of her stola and holding a cornucopiae but the inscription reads PVDICITIA. The coins are very rare, unlisted except in Strack (509, citing examples in Vienna and Sofia, struck with different reverse dies). There were at least three reverse dies that made this error, though. NONE OF THESE ARE MY COINS (I've been outbid EVERY time):

Here's the properly labelled CONCORDIA type for comparison (this one IS my coin):
