Tejas Posted July 9 · Member Share Posted July 9 (edited) I would not normally post a coin from a current auction. However, I have great doubts about the coin below. NumisBids: Noonans Auction 276, Lot 1352 : Roman Coins from Various Properties Roman Imperial Coinage,... It is in particular the reverse, which I don't like. What do you think? akeady Posted July 9 · Supporter Share Posted July 9 Suspiciously heavy at least and not obviously struck. It does seem to be a double die match for the one in the Fitzwilliam Museum linked to on OCRE - http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.4.ss.231 - but over a gram heavier. Dwarf Posted July 9 · Member Share Posted July 9 I didn't check any databases - but the coin looks very, very "soapy" and seems to be cast, not struck. Style may mislead - but I do not trust, too- Regards across the border Klaus 1
curtislclay Posted July 9 · Member Share Posted July 9 A modern fake that I have seen many times since c. 1975, though I don't find it now in Forum's Fake Reports. 6 1
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted July 9 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted July 9 Appears fake but why bother for £ 70-80? 1
Romismatist Posted July 9 · Member Share Posted July 9 Agree with @curtislclay and others - the details on both obverse and reverse are too soft to be struck, in my opinion. Another one that made it through to the auction houses... I would raise it with Noonans...
JeandAcre Posted July 10 · Member Share Posted July 10 To @Dwarf's point, the style just 'smells bad.' Very impressionistically, it might be a Becker, or some other fake that wouldn't necessarily have be contemporary (to us). But beyond that, the technical details other folks here have gotten into are out of my league.
idesofmarch01 Posted July 10 · Member Share Posted July 10 On 7/26/2020 Savoca sold this coin, which appears to be an exact die match (obverse and reverse) with the coin posted above: Although the Savoca coin appears to be a slightly better example, would it be a counterfeit too? Ocatarinetabellatchitchix Posted July 10 · Member Share Posted July 10 (edited) Maybe same coin sold by Roma in 2019 ? Same weight but I see some differences… Edited July 10 by Ocatarinetabellatchitchix
