HipShot Photography Posted July 6 · Member Share Posted July 6 Hello Everyone, I'm fascinated by the history of numismatic photography and I am looking for any gems of information anyone can provide. Does anyone have any stories, anecdotes, references, or links to share? Little known facts? I would be very grateful for any assistance. Also, if anyone can direct me to threads already within this forum on the topic, I'd really appreciate it. I tried searching here but my keywords returned too many results to reasonably sift through.I have been going through the archives of both the ANA and the RCNA, and while it's immensely helpful, it's a slow process, and more importantly, I'm sure this community has a wealth of additional knowledge about numismatic photography beyond North America to share. Anything and everything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Ocatarinetabellatchitchix Posted July 6 · Member Share Posted July 6 (edited) « The numismatic Illustration of the XIX century » is the most complete and detailed paper I ever seen about the history of coin photography. Sorry but it’s in French…but I guarantee it worth the effort to translate it. https://www.persee.fr/doc/numi_0484-8942_1991_num_6_33_1952 Edited July 6 by Ocatarinetabellatchitchix
Harry G Posted July 6 · Member Share Posted July 6 (edited) These aren't my "photos" - I found them link in a Reddit thread, but I feel they may be relevant here. https://sketchfab.com/frankmcmains/collections/numismatics-a014befcf84f47b5a8790542fa480e48 They're essentially 3D scans of coins; the original poster commented that it took around 800 pictures of the coin and stacked them on top of each other, and the setup cost $3950. What a resource the reproduction of university and museum collections could be, with this degree of detail.

Ocatarinetabellatchitchix Posted July 7 · Member Share Posted July 7 (edited) Just copy and paste the text to Google translate. Maybe you’ll need to take screenshots of the pages and transform them to PDF (I use PDF Creator on the web, and it’s free). I downloaded the pdf and used google translate, which worked pretty well, but not without a few hiccups. I had to manually correct a number of formatting issues and translation glitches, but overall, very happy with it and the article is excellent. Well worth the effort. Thank you for recommending it. I'm going to add a link to my translated document on my website when I finish the article.

Broucheion Posted July 21 · Member Share Posted July 21 Hi All, @dougsmit had posted a mid19th century stereogram that included an ancient coin as one of the items displayed. He wrote about it on this list and at CoinTalk but I can’t locate the posts. Maybe he could chime in? - Broucheion
