Leo Posted May 27, 2022 · Member Share Posted May 27, 2022 My shield is common and unremarkable. But everything to thicken the Phalanx! Despire being all smooshed up, the Hercules face on the center is charming

I would hardly call a coin with Herakles, caduceus, a rare monogram aaaand Macedonian shield and helmet, "unremarkable". I do love the Herakles boss. Most likely under Alexander's older brother Philip III, Arrhidaios. Here's some of mine: Edited May 27, 2022 by Ryro

Rv. Athena Alkidomos advancing left brandishing thunderbolt and holding shield. In left field facing helmet decorated with two feathers. Panagopoulou Period 4 Group 2/16 HGC 1042 (as Gonatos) 17.17 grms 30 mm Photo bt W. Hansen Up to last year most everyone assumed that this particular coin was one of the many variations of the type minted for Antigonos Gonatos However Katerina Panagopoulou's massive new work "The Early Antigonids" places this and a number of other tetradrachms of this type into the reign of Antigonos Doson. The helmet on my coin does not have the usual transverse crest that is found on the majority of these coins. It does in fact have a helmet decorated with two feathers. I conjectured that years ago on the old place. And they aren't feathers, they are "cornears", to my understanding (though, have always looked more like Barley to my eye): I'd mentioning the split from Gonatas to Doson being these corn ears on both the AR tetradrachm and AE half and quarter units: Check out the same headgear on this Doson (behind pan): My, what I believe to be Gonatos: Not my coin. Yet again not the normal bushel but rather the feather/cornear/Barley
