Specialist gang ‘targeting’ Ukrainian treasures for removal to Russia

Recommended Posts

Sad and inevitabe. A combination of common looting and an attempt to deprive Ukraine of its history (and therefore, its identity), and at the same time, appropriating it as Russian. Cultural genocide is an appropriate term, should Russia have its way.

Sounds exactly like what the Germans did in World War II. They had whole units full of art historians and archaeologists tasked with deciding what to steal. Of course it's nothing new; Napoleon filled the Louvre with stolen art from Italy and elsewhere.

And Rome is full of Egyptian obelisks.

Most of them appropriated in ancient times, just like most of the ancient Greek works of art found in Rome. After enough time goes by, I guess such objects become part of the appropriator's cultural heritage!
