Here, we are entering the world of phosphate minerals.  Phosphate minerals include a very well known one, one whose role played an important one in human civilizations throughout the globe: turquoise.

Lazulite in kyanite-quartzite matrix from Graves Mountain GA

With deep appreciation for the members of the Aiken Gem and Mineral club who showed a newbie their secret spot and helped me find this nice specimen about 20 years ago on a club field trip

Speaking of stone carvings, here one made from a stone that had high esteem in ancient times, as well as today: lapis lazuli.  This is a tiny frog or toad (18.13 grams), carved in Thailand.  It is a modern object, but the detail and modeling are excellent.

You have two netsuke carvings.  Netsuke is a traditional Japanese carved object, out of ivory, wood and now resin, which is supposed to resemble ivory.  The two holes at the bottom are to secure a cord, since traditional Japanese clothing did not include belts.  The cords were attached to a purse or pouch, for holding various items.  Traditional Japanese kimonos did not have pockets.

Here's one from my collection, and the nicest one, made of fossil ivory, from the first to second decade of the 20th century, by my estimate.  Note the two holes in the back.

Thank you for the info!  Very nice.

Here are a few specimens I bought from an Indonesian rock seller I frequently get lapidary materials from. The one in front is a botryoidal purple chalcedony (known as 'grape agate.' the one in the back right is also from Indonesia - it's blue botryoidal chalcedony that formed in a piece of petrified wood. The back middle piece is native copper in chryscocholla.

I bought the trilobite from a Moroccan dealer at the Tucson gem show a few years back.

This rare 'fingerprint' brecciated jasper from Indonesia arrived less than an hour ago, so I figured I'd show it too. My plan is to slab it and cut cabochons from it for jewelry, if the pattern is as nice as I hope it is. The piece is 10.5 pounds.

I just now bought this Lake Superior agate off Ebay.   I will have a guy named Jason on Tik Tok will grind it and polish it to make a very nice oval palm stone once it gets to me in the mail.  The color is beautiful to me.  It called to me and said "buy me" lol...

Cool Laker!

This is one that I've owned for many years:

Lake Superior agate, Minnesota

8.0cm x 3.5cn x 5.0cm, 304.9 grams

Here's a Kentucky agate that was recently professionally polished. I call it the "Kentucky Twister" because of the abstract rendering of a descending or ascending funnel cloud.

 Kentucky agate, "Kentucky Twister".

12cm x 5.5cm x 5.1cm, 435.2 grams

Those are beautiful.  Have you thought of slicing the top photo 1 ?  or leave as is.

No, absolutely not.  When I was a lot younger I would have done that, and that would be a big mistake.  Agates of that quality are far more valuable and desirable left as is.  The stone has a beautiful glaciated and water washed husk that has taken tens of millions of years to develop.

There are situations when cutting is needed, especially if a stone has little or no pattern on the surface or if there is damage, such as major fractures, that might be mitigated or removed by cutting.

I try to be minimally interventionist when it comes to glaciated and water worn stones.   Stones that have been mined out of formations are another matter.

Here are a few things that have grabbed my senses ferociously enough to bring home.

The closest object that I have to a fossil: a small piece of amber with an unfortunate insect/spider encased inside

Amber.png.b6b32682479c8f4c482d710fec274cfb.png

The rest belong subsumed under "carvings."

Stone and bone hand carved narwhal by Igloolik artist George Aggiaq (b. 1917), c. 1955 - 1960 - it came with the Canadian Igloo tag

Soap stone beaver carved by unknown Anishinaabe artist

Hopi Nataska Ogre Kachina (I know it's wood, but I wanted to include it here anyway)

A trilobite, (550-250 million years ago) purchased from Morocco as it is larger by far then my others of this type, Colpocoryphe grandis.

Also a large chunk of quartz crystals found near our home, weighs nearly 4 kilos
