Good Morning & Happy Friday Everyone!

Today I am super excited to announce the launch of The Cabinet! What is The Cabinet you ask? The Cabinet is your one-stop-shop on Numis Forums to buy and/or sell numismatic goods!

You should all now see a new tab for The Cabinet at the top of your browser. From there, you can submit an advert to either 'Sell' an item, or post a 'Wanted' ad. 'For Sale' items are broken out by sub category, and all 'Wanted' ads will go in the general 'Wanted' section.

Tier Benefits

  • Members
    • Each ad will last for 45 days prior to a renewal needing to be made. You may renew as many times as you like, and each renewal adds an additional 45 days.
  • Supporters
    • Each ad will last for 90 days prior to a renewal needing to be made. You may renew as many times as you like, and each renewal adds an additional 90 days.
  • Patrons
    • Each ad will last for 120 days prior to a renewal needing to be made. You may renew as many times as you like, and each renewal adds an additional 120 days. Your ads will be pinned.
  • Benefactors
    • Each ad will last for 150 days prior to a renewal needing to be made. You may renew as many times as you like, and each renewal adds an additional 150 days. Your ads will be pinned, and featured.

Rules
We are going to be operating on an honor system here. Your listings will be tied to your forum username, so I hope that is enough to keep everyone honest. Please only buy or sell to people you trust/have good reviews. Numis Forums will not be processing payments directly on the site, so buyer & seller will have to arrange payment off site. Please do so using trusted payment sites. Numis Forums will not be able to assist with any transactional disputes. Egregious misbehavior on The Cabinet will compromise your membership on this website at large. To be explicit: if it comes to my attention that anyone is purposefully scamming people, and those accusations are proven, the account will be permanently banned.

Addendum 9.4.22: Fake & replica coins are prohibited from being sold on The Cabinet. While we understand some may enjoy collecting fakes or replicas, we do not wish to aid in their circulation on Numis Forums. Any repeated pattern of knowingly listing such coins will result in the loss of listing privileges on The Cabinet.

I hope you all will enjoy using The Cabinet! I also want to state clearly: there is zero fee to use The Cabinet: this service is offered free to all forum members thanks to the generous donations of our subscribers. As always, suggestions/feedback are always welcome: this site exists for y'all, so please don't hesitate to provide your thoughts!

Enjoy!

Might need an ‘other’ or ‘misc.’ category for ancient too (I’m thinking things like Chinese coins, Parthians, Indian/Kushan, etc.)

but I’m excited for this!

Very cool!!  Great that the service is free too. I think this new feature will be very successful!

A few random thoughts:

I guess we’ll have to see if there’s a problem with people signing up as members only to place a bunch of garbage ads nobody is interested in, crowding out the legit members’ ads. I’m hopeful that won’t happen, at least not for a long while anyway. Of course pinning the higher donors’ ads helps with that problem. Something to monitor, anyway.

Maybe the categories will need refining over time. Probably good to reflect the subforums. I agree with @FitzNigel, but would make the category “non-western” for now. (Eliminating Islamic.)

Overlaps: Tricky. What does “medieval” mean? Someone might post a medieval Islamic coin there.

What about some pick-bin categories for cheap stuff?  Probably what I would recommend is something along the lines of the AMCC categories I used - of course!! 😁 They did work very well though:

Probably would make sense to add a World pick-bin, and divide world up a bit.

suppose it’s OK to have a U.S. category as long as it doesn’t make it into the subforums too. They have enough venues and I think it’s really important that Numisforums be emphatically not a U.S. coin site. Of course some members do both so a small sales category is OK.

Maybe a 10-25 post minimum to be able to post in it so it could cut down potential spam or just drive by visitors?

In the regular forums, you mean. Yes, but maybe based on reputation score instead of post count.  I for one would be strongly in favour of a requirement for a minimum “reputation” count before you get to post ads at all.  That could solve quite a few potential problems.

And the number of ads you can post could vary with support level. Right now “supporter” doesn’t get you much.

Just want to emphasize: ads on The Cabinet will be moderated the same way as threads on the Forum, so any spam will be removed. If it becomes an issue I do have admin controls to limit things, but going to give the benefit of the doubt for now that spamming won't be an issue 🙂 Only registered members of the site can post, and it's very apparent via my control view if spam accounts are being created.

Thanks so much @Restitutor! I just posted the first coins wanted sign in there and it was very user friendly (only hiccup being that it makes me put a dollar amount on a wanted when it really depends on the coin they hopefully bring to the table). I bet nobody can guess what coin type I am looking for🤪

Good idea. I also have some auction catalogs covering antiquities and coins that I'd happily give away for the price of the postage, just to help out my sagging bookshelves 😄. If not, I can always just post them here with the word FREE in the title.

Ads are set up so that you can enter in a price of 0 for free items 😊

Oh good!  Actually, even better than that, I think... here's what it looks like:

image.thumb.jpeg.a0debc1dc358bf49f325da1a68d9f1ba.jpeg

Someone commented above that it would be nice not to have to specify a price at all, and it looks like that's what this means. "If you do not want a price shown, just add 0."  So for free stuff we put "Free" in the title, but for something like a list of several coins with different prices we would just enter 0 and put the prices in the text/images - is that right?

Here's another screenshot, on condition:

image.thumb.jpeg.3f424241abe83114743207ca6bb4a4d5.jpeg

I really don't think specifying condition should be required.  There are not a few of us who think condition on ancients slabs is nonsense, for example. 🤓

I'm just full of advice today, aren't I?  My excuse is I'm on a high dose of steroids for immunotherapy side effects... your patience is appreciated... ☺️

Thanks for being the beta tester for this 😄 I've gone ahead and added in an 'N/A' option for 'Condition'. At present I don't believe there's a way to make it a non-required field. Hope that helps!

This is an excellent feature and a great use of “The Cabinet” for a name @Restitutor.

I know most users probably visit the site on a PC so I always feel silly being the one to always bring up the mobile UI. :classic_blush: Below is what I see on mobile.

Not easy to see the photos at a glance. Is it possible to orient the listings to scroll up and down on mobile so the photos will show better? Also I know it’s possible I’m just missing something. 🤓

100% agree! The title is nice and concise.

As well, I too am a 80-90% mobile poster and wouldn't complain if we could get a better view without having to select the attached image.
