Cordoba Posted June 8, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 8, 2022 (edited) i was wondering if the flips given by auction houses are generally safe for long term coin storage. i've had a couple that smelled like pvc (shower curtain smell), so i'm not sure if i should use different holders for long term storage. Severus Alexander Posted June 8, 2022 · Supporter Share Posted June 8, 2022 Many do not use safe flips, and some state this on their invoices (e.g. CNG). If in doubt, definitely wise to change the flip! 8

red_spork Posted June 8, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 8, 2022 I think you should always throw the auction house or dealer flips out, new flips are way too cheap to risk using one of unknown origin
David Atherton Posted June 8, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 8, 2022 I throw them out because I absolutely hate plastic or mylar flips. The archival safe ones are too hard and brittle to be practical (removing coins from them is a chore!) and the soft ones are unsafe for long term storage. Instead, I use paper envelopes ... they are safe, traditional, and best of all cheap.

ValiantKnight Posted June 8, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 8, 2022 (edited) I won a coin from Roma a couple of months ago and it came in this holder with black hard plastic edges that snap open/closed (I think they are referred to as “floating frames”?). It was a neat way to store and display the coin but the hard black plastic reeked. So I ended up moving the coin into a Saflip after a couple of days. Yes, I've received several coins I've won from Roma -- although not all of them -- "floating" in those little black boxes. They're kind of nice-looking visually, but not practical for me given that I like to put my coins in trays. So I regretfully pierce the plastic to remove the coins. I wish I could tell Roma not to bother putting my coins in those things in the first place, but I imagine they do so before the auctions. They’re reuseable… Well, I certainly couldn't figure out a way to remove the coin without destroying the thing! But I am an all-thumbs kind of person. And since I would never use the boxes, it doesn't really matter.
UkrainiiVityaz Posted June 8, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 8, 2022 House flips get flipped into the rubbish bin. Safeflips and capsules are the way to go.
Kali Posted June 8, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 8, 2022 I keep all the flips. If they are scratched, partly torn or have tape that's impossible to remove, then they go in the trash. PVC based ones I will reuse for when I trade or sell a few off. if they're sticky from age/pvc seeping through, trash.
