I have only 2-3 coins of Probus, and none of those are photographed.  I'm waiting for Carinus.

Amazingly enough, I only have c. 3 coins of Claudius II.

Yep, Carinus is next for me too

Probably my favourite Probus portrait is on this first issue from Rome:

image.jpeg.6ed2db04484b749ff7bde7260c232254.jpeg

But I also like two others. First, this Lugdunum.  I think overall the Lugdunum style is the most lifelike:

image.jpeg.c91bcd5b5ed34c95389ff4eedd4c49b7.jpeg

I'm also pretty fond of this Siscia portrait:

image.jpeg.f5c9657d29b524dcc3888b271b6cf606.jpeg

The worst style portraits are surely those from the "uncertain Asian mint"!

image.jpeg.1d287787c9d5bdb9a1c7b366600b05ed.jpeg

(Though Tripolis can be pretty bad too...)

I bet nobody else has a coin from Probus's short-lived "van Dyke" beard style, very briefly depicted at Lugdunum:

March 27, a glorious sunny morning here in Europe, whereas Americans have just gone to bed (some of you, I have no doubt, sporting an Anthony van Dyke beard like Probus did in Lyons - what a discovery!). According to the scheme, it is Carus Day!

3303Carusct.jpg.1357e752139bb42ba52299cf3fd021bd.jpg

Here he is, Marcus Aurelius Carus (c. 222-283), in a delicious chocolate color, an Alexandrian tetradrachm. Rev. Dikaiosyne standing. Year A = 282.

17 mm, 7.69 gr. Emmett 3396.

We're still on Probus! Please check out the OP to see what the scheduled time is to move to the next Emperor:

ALSO, in order to further streamline the schedule, I am introducing a set time - 3pm Eastern Standard - as the time when we switch from one Emperor to another. That way, I do not hold up the thread if I am unable to introduce the new Emperor for whatever reason. From now on, 3pm EST every 48 hours is the time we move on to the next Emperor's portraits!

Probus still has a few hours left!

Whew! Thought I missed Probus posting time. Would look bad if I missed posting stuff from my core collection! I would post about some fruitful research I have been doing some coinage but alas it will stay secret for the moment! I think I'll stick with the military E1 busts this time around for the art gallery.

I was a bit early, hence I am following the after 3 pm EDT rule and deleted my errant Carus post in the Probus sequence. Carus, as you may know, supposedly met his demise via a thunderbolt thrown by Jove, e.g., he was killed by lightning whilst on campaign. Gibbon reports that the success of his arms against Persia, capturing Ctesiphon and pushing Eastward led him to believe he might carry the Roman standard into India, replicating the success of Alexander the Great...but alas, it was not to be as the army voted to head back to Mesopotamia upon his unexpected death.

Carus AE Antoninianus. (283 A.D.) 21 mm, 3.3 grams, Antioch mint

Obverse: IMP CM AVR CARVS PF AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right

Reverse: VIRTVS AVGGG, Carus standing right, receiving Victory from Jupiter, Carinus or Numerian, standing left. officina letter Δ below. Mintmark XXI.

Reference: Sear 12190.

Here's my one Carus, proudly displaying his hairless pate. He certainly belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of famously bald(ing) Romans, together with . . . who? (Julius Caesar, Trajan Decius, Otho sans toupee, and perhaps the Flavians come to mind.)

Carus, silvered AE Antoninianus, late Autumn 282 [when second son, Numerian, was elevated to Caesar] - Autumn 283 AD [death of Carus], Antioch Mint (1st Officina). Obv. Radiate bust right, IMP C M AVR CARVS PF AVG/ Rev. VIRTUS AVGGG, Carus, standing right, receives Victory from Jupiter standing left, holding long scepter, star in upper field, A in lower middle field (= 1st Officina, Antioch Mint), XXI in exergue [20/1 copper/silver ratio of alloy]. RIC V-2 125(A), Sear RCV III 12190, ERIC II 141, Cohen 117. 20.25 mm., 3.59 g. For the dating of Carus’s coins with AVGGG reverse (issued at Antioch mint only), see http://augustuscoins.com/ed/Carus/  .
