  • Benefactor

Some years ago, Andrew McCabe visited and photographed part of my collection. Those images are numbered in a file on our pc. I just rolled a die twice, coming up 4, then 6. So here is number 46 in that folder. Can't get much more random than that!

Here is a random coin from my collection. Interesting, since I was just reading about Agrippa's death in Cassius Dio's history of Rome:

"Such was the end of Agrippa, who had in every way proved himself clearly the noblest of the men of his day and used the friendship of Augustus for the emperor's own greatest benefit and for that of the commonwealth. So much as he surpassed others in excellence, to such an extent did he voluntarily make himself lower than his patron. He employed all his own skill and bravery for what would prove most profitable to Augustus and expended all the honor and power received from him on benefitting others. As a result he never became in the least troublesome to Augustus nor the object of jealousy on the part of others. He helped his friend organize the monarchy like one who was really in love with the idea of supreme power and he won over the populace by his kindness, showing himself most truly a friend of the people."

Cassius Dio, Dio's Rome, book 4

A couple of seated goddesses:

Septimius Severus, 193-211 A.D. AR Denarius (19 mm, 3.3 g) SEVERVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right. RESTITVTOR VRBIS, Roma seated left holding palladium & spear, round shield below. RIC 288, RSC 606.

1876 US trade dollar, San Francisco mint

Both of these coins were minted several centuries apart from each other. Yet they have similar reverse motifs (seated goddess). Just shows how coin designs are conservative

Another rando. I picked this one up a few years ago because I liked the way the silvering highlights the obverse details.

Today’s random coin is another Diocletian. This one is one of my favorites of the period because it is an uncommon sole reign issue.

Another random. This coin was an AMCC pick up and I was excited to win it for the WWII provenance.
