Topcat7 Posted November 28, 2022 · Member Posted November 28, 2022 (edited) I purchased a coin listed as "ANCIENT ROME, REPUBLIC PERIOD: Bronze Coin". I believe it to be; an anonymous Sextans, 217-215 B.C., AE20mm., 4.02gm. Obv: Head of Mercury right, wearing winged petasos. Two pellets above. Rev: Prow of galley right, ROMA above, two pellets below. Ref: Crawford 38/5; Sydenham 85; BMCRR 59; Sear 610. (Let us see your Sextans') Edited November 28, 2022 by Topcat7 12 Quote
ambr0zie Posted November 28, 2022 · Member Posted November 28, 2022 I find attributing RR bronzes very difficult. But I think 38/5 is incorrect as the Sextans should be much heavier. Check https://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/RRC056.html A description of RR bronzes providing weights for different types. 3 Quote
Qcumbor Posted November 28, 2022 · Supporter Posted November 28, 2022 It is indeed a sextans, since it features two pellets. Republic, Sextans, Rome, circa 211-206 BC Head of Mercury right, wearing petasus, two pellets above helmet ROMA, Prow of galley right, surmounted by a victory right 5.11 gr Ref : RCV #1218 Q 11 Quote
ambr0zie Posted November 28, 2022 · Member Posted November 28, 2022 (edited) Absolutely, but I don't think the OP coin is 38/5 as the sextans should be ~28 g for that group. I also have one where I am not sure about the catalogue attribution Anonymous 215-212 BC. Rome Sextans Æ 29 mm, 16,32 g Head of Mercury right, wearing winged petasus; •• (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; •• (mark of value) below. Crawford 41/9; Sydenham 107; BMCRR 72. This was the closest attribution I could find but I am not sure at all. Edited November 28, 2022 by ambr0zie 10 1 Quote

This is actually a corn-ear/wheat ear(above prow) KA(to right of prow) series sextans from Sicily, Crawford 69/6a. These are often worn and/or badly struck and even overstruck which really makes a mess of them, but the style is quite distinct. 2 Quote
antwerpen2306 Posted November 28, 2022 · Member Posted November 28, 2022 nice coin, but to date later. I don't know much of bronze republican coins, but I think you have to look much later, end second or first century Quote

Topcat7 Posted November 28, 2022 · Member Author Posted November 28, 2022 To everyone, thank you for your comments. Exactly what I was hoping for. Everything about all coins is too much for one person to know. Your comments are much appreciated. 1 Quote
