dougsmit Posted October 31, 2022 · Member Share Posted October 31, 2022 Later to the party even than usual, I believe most of these duplicate what has been shown before. A favorite shown too many times before is an Augustus as with countermark by Tiberius TIBCAVF. A severe die clash left a large die cud on the GEN LVG COS II Clodius Albinus reverse. Heliodromus Posted October 31, 2022 · Member Share Posted October 31, 2022 Here's a few scarcer Lugdunese types issued by Constantine I c.308 AD. This was an interesting time period with Constantine in cahoots with Maximianus and Maxentius, aligned against Galerius. At this point the legitimate western augustus Severus II had been killed attempting to recover Rome from Maximianus & Maxentius, and Galerius had also been forced to retreat in his own attempt to oust the usurpers. Constantine, now enjoying the title of augustus thanks to Maximianus, and married to his daughter Fausta, was apparently feeling pretty confident in the alliance and their ability to stand up to Galerius, and issued an interesting set of coin types from Lyons essentially proposing a "new world order" lead by himself and Maximianus, also recognizing Maxentius, and insulting Galerius by demoting him with a coin legend of junior augustus (IVN AVG). RIC VI Lyons 252 Constantino P Avg B Rp Nat (Bono Reipvblicae Nato/Natis) - Constantine pius augustus, born for the good of the state ! RIC 278 Secvrit Perpet DD NN - Perpetual security of our lords (augustii) = Constantine & Maximnianus RIC 281 Temporvm Felicitas (we see the feel-good T-F abbreviation on many of Constantine's coins, but only here used as an actual reverse type) RIC 254 Galerius as IVN AVG (junior augustus) It would all be too much for Galerius - the Italian defeats, unsupers in power, and now this slap in the face. By the end of the year (308 AD) he would convene a conference at Carnuntum, inviting the retired Diocletian (who'd also been made consul in 308) to lend some authority to the occasion, to try to being some order back to the rapidly deteriorating tetrarchic system. As a result Maximian would be forced back into retirement, Maxentius would be pronounced enemy of the state, and Constantine would be awarded the meaningless title of FIL AVG, which he immediately ignored.
