Prieure de Sion Posted September 17, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 17, 2022 (edited) Flavius Honorius Solidus of Theodosius II 408/420 AD Material: Gold Diameter: 22mm Weight: 4.48g Mint: Constantinopolis Reference: RIC X Theodosius II (East) 201 Obverse: Bust of Honorius, helmeted, pearl-diademed, cuirassed, facing front, holding spear in right hand behind head and shield decorated with horseman on left arm. The Inscription reads: D N HONORI-VS P F AVG for Dominus Noster Honorius Pius Felix Augustus. Reverse: Constantinopolis, helmeted, draped, enthroned, facing front, head right, holding sceptre in right hand and Victory on globe in left hand, right foot on prow. The Inscription reads: CONCORDI-A AVGGG for Concordia augustorum (Harmony of the Augusts). Honorius is particularly known to posterity because of a famous anecdote recorded by Procopius of Caesarea, according to which the emperor was more interested in the breeding of his chickens and the well-being of his favourite chicken Roma than in the news of the fall of Rome. Deinomenid Posted September 18, 2022 · Supporter Share Posted September 18, 2022 H for Hieron I, tyrant of Syracuse, patron of the poets Simonides, Pindar and Bacchylides, and of Aeschylus and Epicharmus. Defeater of the Etruscans at Cumae, arguably saving Greek Italy from Etruscan domination. Hippic victor at Delphi and Olympia. Great city of Syracuse, sacred precinct of Ares who plumbs the depths of war, divine nurse of men and horses that delight in iron, I come to you bearing this song from shining Thebes, an announcement of the four-horse chariot that shakes the earth, in which Hieron victoriously conquered with his splendid carriage and wreathed Ortygia with far-beaming garlands. Sicily Syracuse, AR Tetradrachm, 485-478AD, Archaic bust of Arethusa right, Diademed, necklaced, with "All seeing" eye type, 4 dolphins around, rev Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, holding reins and kentron Nike flying above, wings outstretched, crowning the horses, Beaded border around, 16.95g, (Boehringer 335 (A/ 165 ; R/ 235) ; ANS.108)

Di Nomos Posted September 18, 2022 · Member Share Posted September 18, 2022 My nomination for the letter H is Hermes on this tetradrachm from Ainos in Thrace, c. 450 BC. It's a type I've wanted since seeing one for the first time, and having a provenance back to 1908 and once being in the Charles Gillet collection made this one very desirable for me. As with most of the photos I use, the coin is more attractive in hand, as it doesn't properly show the beautiful toning.
