And I like having everything visible. I bought my desktop earlier this year when my 10-year old one died, and I don't think having enough space or speed to open a large document is a problem; the hard drive is 1 Terabyte. Plus I pay for lots of space in the cloud with Google Drive & Dropbox and all that kind of thing. I think the issue and confusion here is the attempt to have one document store everything. Personally, I have separate stores depending on the use. Excel spreadsheet - I use this for two purposes. First, that's where I copy my attributions for sites like this. Second, it provides information on when I purchased a coin, for how much, and any additional data the seller provided. I've never sold any of my coins, but if I wanted to, or if my family decided to sell my collection after my demise, this would provide valuable information for the auction house or seller. Photos - I have these keyworded in Lightroom. I just search for the photo and right click to export. Easy-peasy. There's absolutely no need to embed them in a Word document, because no one's going to read that. Coin story - I have these in separate word documents with the name of the coin as the title. This is really just a backup. The stories themselves are also on my web site. That's really the main spot for my stories, since it doesn't make sense IMHO to write all that if no one's able to read it. Note that these stories include the attribution and photo. The biggest drawback I currently have is organization on my website. I have many more coins than these, but the way I have them organized there is cute but unwieldy. Either at the end of this year or the beginning of the next I plan to organize them in more visual ways and add my Roman coins. This will require a good deal of effort and I have several other projects I need to see to first.
Dafydd Posted August 30, 2022 · Supporter Share Posted August 30, 2022 Over 50 years my tastes have been so eclectic, mainly influenced by highs and lows of financial ability, I never really catalogued until I drifted into Ancients. Given my interest in ancient history my late arrival was surprising. I used to hand write cards but you can't really travel around with them and once lost , they were gone. I was never adroit at Excel and after several poor attempts and frustrating failures when I wiped out data I graduated to Coin Organizer Deluxe which works well although I have no skill in using all the features yet. I only hope its not like my cell phones because by the time I manage to use them properly forsaking several upgrades, they don't work properly It cost me $75 about the price of some of the coins I collect but it offers me more than I could have imagined for myself . These are some of the features that include storing multiple images advertised are; Coin Processing Features Ready-to-use database templates and the user-friendly interface let you easily and quickly enter, organize, manage, track, and process all your coin related information: manage unlimited number of coin records print coin lists, print coin catalogues, print coin reports print coin labels, print cards, , print coin barcode labels quick search, regular search, advanced search sort coin records by any field manage multiple coin databases move records from/to coin tables, copy/paste records create web catalogues enter coin information in any language (UNICODE) manage your coin data with the powerful Firebird SQL database management system Unlimited Database Management: You can use our application for all your coin collections data management needs. You can add personal or business custom database solutions. My caveat is that there could be a future chance insomuch that the software changes and becomes obsolete. What happens then? I guess print everything out and wonder why I did this. Compared to several methods here, this certainly isn't foolproof but suits me. They have a good template for Ancients with ten different fields that all collate and can be printed as an A4 sheet with images. I just wish I had started this a long time ago.

It's not really necessary for me either for my own practical purposes, since all it would do is make it very slightly faster to find the coin image that goes with a particular coin description, without having to do a separate search (no matter how simple that is) for the image. It did occur to me, however, that it might be useful to have everything (descriptions and images together) in one document, in the cloud, for insurance purposes. Hopefully that would never become relevant, but one never knows. Edited August 30, 2022 by DonnaML
GregH Posted August 31, 2022 · Member Share Posted August 31, 2022 Most of my collection is a one-or-two per Roman / British ruler collection, which i organise chronologically on trays in a Victorian mahogany coin cabinet. I keep the accompanying records in a Ppt document, leaving spaces for missing rulers: I have a few Greek coins (mostly Alexander & Ptolemy types) and Sasanians - and again i go by chronological order. I keep records separately in Excel for insurance purposes, where i track how much i paid for the coins.
