Cool fact about a lot of Alexander tets in this auction is that is that they were used my Lloyd Taylor in his studies!
it was a great selection of tetradrachms in this auction. I managed to grabbed the Salamis one. Sadly struck out on some others.

At the Glyptotek Museum in Copenhagen they have some great ancient statuary but also have (or had a few years ago) one which was made to look like it had fallen over and was all smashed up. I am sure we were far from the first "wits" to think of this but I had one of my boys stand next to it in apparent despair. We got some fairly shocked unsuspecting tourists walking into the room and seeing it and him. He was even shouted at by one elderly couple.
This is gold.

my newest addition to my Dutch coinage collection.
A neat big silver coin from the Dutch, when being ruled by French.
A 50 stuiver piece, with the portrait of Louis Napoleon // Lodewijk Napoleon (Dutch name). Brother of the famous French ruler.
He was a decent ruler, he even learned Dutch and showed sympathy with the Dutch after disasters. His brother thought he was too soft.
Its a heavy piece coming in at 26+ grams of silver. With a superb controlmark of a big bee!- 8

That is one great owl! Even if it is most famous ancient coin there is, its still a great piece of history and one chunky coin to own.

The problem with this topic (as we already see above) is that each person has a different set of needs. As such many solutions will have aspects some find invaluable and others will find useless. Explore the options and find what works best for you (though in all likelihood none will be perfect).
For me my needs are simple. I just want a simple record with the info. that I want. As such I simply use a Word document. I know, it isnt easily searched and one cant readily compare data (which I have no need for anyway). I am just keeping a running tab, add in new entries when needed and in the place needed. The outcome is kind of like an old fashioned auction catalog or sales booklet. When the day comes and I sell out I will have it printed and hard bound so I can take it out and reminisce. This works perfectly for me but will be useless for others.
This is the way i do it too. Work fine for me but i would like to try some other ways like suggested in this thread.
Thats a great Alexander btw!

Yes, this coin came out of Roma's E-Sale 100, lot 178. The coin has definite wear and there are cleaning marks on the reverse, but overall it is quite appealing, especially the obverse. The control symbol on the reverse is a janiform head-vase.
I can't possibly assemble a comprehensive collection of Alexander III's tetradrachms; that would be a lifetime pursuit. So, I collect on a more random, selective basis, based on a coin's appeal and historical significance.
Nice! I had it on my watchlist, but could not bid at that time. I also collect the same way you do.

Here's a recent arrival that I think might be a lifetime tetradrachm, or an early posthumous one. I really don't specialize in this coinage so any input would be very helpful.
This coin, according the description, was struck under Antipater and it was assigned a low Price catalog number, Price 6. Further, the mint was attributed to Amphipolis, but with quotes which suggests this may or may not be the case.
Where does this coin fit in the chronology of Alexander III's coinage? Thanks.
16.96 grams
Was this the one from the last Roma? Neat coin. Janus if i remember correctly!

Did watch today for a bit. Some nice coins went up for sale! Not bidding, way out of my league.
Curious to see how the Greek section will do! They have some awesome coins in that section.- 1

Its been very pleasing to read! The Alexander coinage is an very interesting period. Even after collecting them for couple of years, i still learn new things!
plus they are just a beauty to look at with all the different styles and mints. Which is wat also makes them so interesting
