A Japanese 100 mon from Akita, cast from 1860 to 1863. The design is apparently based on a sword guard of the daimyo of the province. I would be interested to see if the original still exists somewhere. I have a few more Japanese coins with phoenixes on them, but no pictures yet.

The green spots are hard, so I will happily leave it be. I should have prefaced that the green spots were there since I purchased it about six months ago, and I have noticed no change since then.

I recently acquired this French plaquette, and noticed it has some green spots. What is the best way to treat them, and make sure that they do not spread?

The first specimen is actually a Federal Reserve Bank Note, made in such haste in 1933 that they reused National Bank Note plates rather than making new ones. In the lower right they simply blacked out President and wrote Governor. National Bank Notes were issued by banks up to the amount of a U.S. bond they bought to back the notes. So if the First National Bank of [insert town here] bought a $50,000 U.S. Bond, they could issue $50,000 worth of banknotes and Bureau of Engraving and Printing would print them for them. The National Bank program initially began during the Civil War, as it served as a way to increase government revenue. I have two from my hometown.

I have four rupees I need help identifying and double checking. I have no clue about the first one. I think these next two are both Shah Jahan, but I don’t know the mint or year for either. Similar situation as the last two, but I am just double checking since the flip’s information seems correct based off of comparable examples I’ve seen.

I have a question specifically regarding issues of Valerian and Mariniana. From Pacatian onwards the mint of Viminacium struck antoniniani, just like at Rome. My question is a basic one. How can the ones from Viminacium be distinguished between the ones from Rome? I haven’t read Göbl, but that seems to be the only source that makes the distinction between mints.

I have a question about Class 2 obols. I got one in a CNG auction about 6 years ago (hard to believe I’ve had it that long!). How common are obols compared to their larger denier counterparts? Also, as a related question, are Class 2 deniers from Melle particularly expensive? I’d like to get one to match it some day. These are old images from when I first got it.

Today, the Royal Mint revealed the new coin portrait of Charles III, designed Martin Jennings. I shamelessly took these pictures from their Instagram. I personally think it’s a little strange that they didn’t wait a year (or even a month) to release the new portrait. However, it does manage to relive my curiosity about its appearance. What are your thoughts? Will you buy the new set?

This Justinian follis is my avatar. I chose it because I felt it was an excellent representation of my collecting interests at the time. Now of course I still keep an eye out for Byzantine, but I have certainly grown into other areas. If I were to change it, my lifetime Alexander drachm or one of my Chinese ones would be the most likely candidate.An ok combination picture made in a minute.The drachm. It’s hard to photograph my mediocre example of this 1799 farthing from the Soho mint in Birmingham. Interestingly, this is the first British coin where the denomination is spelled out.

Whenever I look at long series such as Wu Zhus or Kanei Tsuhos I always have an issue with distinguishing some varieties. Luckily, I have this forum’s knowledge. So, what type is this Wu Zhu?

Title says it all, really. I’ll only be able to be there for one day, but I plan to make the most of it. Of course, being a college student now, it’s nice to simply look at everything.

I always love Italian money, in part because of their realism. I also like some specific coins from the late Qing Empire and early Republic of China, almost all by Giorgi. I also enjoy anything Art Nouveau and Art Deco. One example of Art Deco coinage that not many people seem to mention is Percy Metcalf’s series for Turkey in the 1930s. I only need the biggest and smallest ones (the 1 kuruş and 1 lira). I always found the Art Deco treatment of Atatürk himself to be an interesting design choice. I also collect Japanese, mainly pre-Meiji, but a few milled ones. This is a general observation about pre-Meiji Japanese coins in my experience. It seems like past a certain point the amount of types you can easily get really dries up once you have the really common four minor silver and gold ones. Of course, maybe I just don’t keep a close enough eye on Stephen Album’s stuff.
